The Buryats’ Culture of Empathy as Model of Traditional Communication and System of Humanising the Ethnic Group

Abstract. The study aims to reveal nature of empathy in the context of ethnic culture; in this regard, it is of particular interest to consider models, codes and institutions of traditional communication, as well as their moral motivation - folk ethics. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the author proposes a fresh take on empathy as an integral component of the Buryats’ ethnic life, embodied in stereotypical forms of thinking, feeling and behaviour. At the same time, empathic traditions are understood as being related to productivity and improvement of spiritual life, and, therefore, as being close to intentions and principles of humanistic ethnology. As a result of the research, it is shown that spiritual accumulations and their subjective assessments construct and recommunicate mental and psychological unity of the ethnic group, its mentality - ethnic image, worldview and ethos. Culture of empathy as a static part of the Buryats’ ethnic self-consciousness has now achieved the status of a marker of their ethnic self-identification.
