Abstract. The paper aims to develop understanding of theoretical approaches to the content of the notion "ethnic identity" and mechanisms of preserving ethnic identity among the indigenous peoples of the North (the Khanty and the Mansi). Scientific novelty of the work lies in carrying out a comprehensive analysis of the notion "ethnic identity" and its content-related interconnection with the notion "ethnic self-consciousness", which is presented as a basis for an ethnic group’s identity. As a result, it is proved that the notions "ethnic identity" and "ethnic self-consciousness" are similar in meaning. Ethnic identity is formed through cultural elements (language, traditions, customs, archetypes, etc.), which are manifested in mythological, worldview, folklore images in an ethnic group’s self-consciousness. The author has considered interconnection between ethnic identity and self-consciousness using the example of the Ugrian peoples of the Ob North and taking into account these peoples’ ethnocultural specificity.
Key words and phrases: этническое самосознание, этническая идентичность, архетипы, мифология, фольклор, ethnic self-consciousness, ethnic identity, archetypes, mythology, folklore
