Tambov Provincial Extraordinary Commission in Fight against Peasant Rebellion (1918-1922)

Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the activities of Tambov Cheka (Extraordinary Commission) in fight against the 1918-1922 peasant rebellion. The researchers have analysed forms of participation and nature of the measures applied by the Provincial Cheka to counter anti-government protests of Tambov peasants. Scientific novelty of the work lies both in formulation of the issue under study and in the content of the sources used. Methodology of researching this issue is based on conceptual approaches of peasant studies. As a result, it is ascertained that the 1918-1919 "riots" and the 1920-1922 uprising in Tambov province, caused by the Bolshevist agrarian policy, posed a threat to the Communist government’s security. Tambov Provincial Extraordinary Commission, being a punitive body, was used to organise and carry out repressive measures in order to suppress the peasant rebellion.
