Prince Vladimir‘s Korsun Campaign and the Events Preceding Christianization of Rus'

Abstract. The research objectives are as follows: to identify the date of Prince Vladimir‘s Korsun campaign and to reconstruct the related events. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the author justifies a new interpretation of events associated with Prince Vladimir‘s campaign. The conducted research allows drawing the following conclusions: Vladimir Sviatoslavich conquered Korsun in the summer or autumn of 987. In spring 988, when Byzantine emperors appealed to Russian prince, he was still in Crimea. In April-May 988 negotiations were conducted, and in June Russian prince baptized in Korsun together with his army of six thousand men and departed for Constantinople. There, in the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Vladimir married Princess Anna. In May-June 989, after the defeat of Bardas Phokas, Vladimir departed for homeland. Christianization of Kiev and its surroundings allegedly took place in August-September 989.
