Medical Discourse from the Perspective of Social Constructivism

Abstract. The purpose of the study is to analyse medical discourse as a kind of institutional discourse in its influence on modern public consciousness. The authors consider the evolution of the discourse theory, determine the specifics of institutional forms of discursive practices. The article examines the impact of medical discourse on the understanding of social processes, its role in the formation of socially relevant practices. Scientific novelty lies in providing insight into the social conditionality of public consciousness medicalisation, in identifying potential threats hidden in this phenomenon. The authors extrapolated provisions of the modern philosophy of discourse to the situation associated with the increased influence of medical instructions and recommendations on public consciousness in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, it has been shown that medical discourse acts as a mediator of social processes, is a tool of social construction.
