TYPES OF THE GERMAN RIDDLES

Abstract. The article presents the main types of the German riddles: language riddles (Sprachr?tsel), counting riddles (Rechenr?tsel), riddles-drawings or rebuses (Bilderr?tsel, Rebusse). Particular attention is paid to language riddles as the most ancient and numerous type of riddles, which, in its turn, is divided into subject (Sachr?tsel) and verbal riddles (Wortr?tsel). Among verbal riddles one can distinguish letter riddles (Buchstabenr?tsel), anagrams (Anagramm), palindromes (Palindrom), charades (Scharade or Silbenr?tsel), aritmogrifs (Aritmogriph), riddles based on polysemy or homonymy (Homonymr?tsel).
