Abstract. The article discusses the notion of initiative in foreign-language oral speech and the problem of its development in educational process at linguistic faculties. The author determines the main task, which consists in teaching the conscious manipulation of language material to students for the independent and initiative expression of their thoughts, as well as provides the psychological and methodical substantiations of the term "initiative speaking".
