Abstract. The article considers the peculiarities of proper name functioning in the dramatic satire by V. P. Burenin "Literary Reading and Discussion in ‘Bedlam-Modern’ Society". The authors try to identify the meaning of names-masks in V. P. Burenin’s critical essay. It is shown that in this literary text the name performs double function: on the one hand, it represents author’s individual style in the depiction of reality; on the other hand, the name acquires the value of meaning-generative device which not only helps to create required artistic image but involves the reader into a kind of game.
