Christopher Marlowe’s Image in the Novel "A Dead Man in Deptford" by A. Burgess

Abstract. The article analyses Christopher Marlowe’s image in the novel "A Dead Man in Deptford" by A. Burgess. The study shows that, reconsidering generally accepted interpretations of the dramatist’s life story, the writer creates his own image of the talented Elizabethan; this image satisfies the author’s conception of creativity whose key provisions are de-romanticization and hyper-sexuality of the creator’s image. The paper emphasizes the hero’s religious search, which is in tune with the author’s search and shows that Marlowe’s image in the novel differs cardinally from the generally accepted one. The writer denies Marlowe’s atheism and depicts his hero as a devout Catholic burdened with guilt.
