Abstract. The article provides a multi-aspect analysis of the province phenomenon in the modern humanities knowledge. Formation of the "province" concept in the Russian linguistic worldview is traced. Axiological and semantic components of the "province" concept in the Russian and European languages are identified, their common features are revealed. "Province" semantics is described through semiotic two-member and four-member oppositions and their symbolic components. Linguistic and literary critical approaches to analysing the province phenomenon are described. The conclusion is made that the humanities examine the Russian province in natural-geographical, spiritual-ethical and figurative-symbolic aspects.
