Functional Characteristics of Exclamation Mark in the Modern English Discourse

Abstract. The article examines peculiarities of punctuation marks usage in the modern English discourse. The study aims to describe typical functions of the exclamation mark with a view to emphasize its newly developed functional potential. The research material includes the modern English print media texts, artistic discourse, methodological papers and authors’ guides. Originality of the study includes revealing syntactic peculiarities of the exclamation mark functioning in the modern discourse from the viewpoint of the expressive syntax potential. The research findings can be used while teaching English grammar.
