Abstract. The article examines variability of participles and (participial) adjectives ending in -ed with full and partial vocalization of -ed, traces their origin and historical development, identifies their morphological peculiarities in the modern English language. Re¬lying on the lexicographical approach, the author analyses the process of their separation from the verbal paradigm and adjectivization. For the first time, the paper provides a full list of units with variational vocalization of -ed and clarifies the role of phonetic criterion in ascertaining morphological affiliation of these units.
