Abstract. The article examines implementation of principles of the comical in A. P. Chekhov’s play "The Seagull". Traditional philological and scenic interpretations of the play emphasize its dramatic, even tragic element, and, consequently, the tragic side of conflict. The study aims to identify the basic motivation of conflict and to justify its comic nature. For this purpose, the researcher examines the author’s genre attribution through the lenses of the classical definition of comedy based on the inadequacy principle. The conclusion is made that the personages’ all-encompassing envy is the basic genre-formative feature of the play.
