Abstract. The article for the first time provides a comprehensive literary analysis of the historical novel by M.-N. Khalilov "Sali Suleiman" identifying its meaningful and formal components. It is shown that the novel, representing evolution of the historical novel genre, became a landmark of the Kumyk and, more broadly, Dagestan post-Soviet prose. The paper argues that the author’s appeal to poetical means, traditions of epical folklore is conditioned by the image of the main hero, athlete and strongman, who remained in the people’s memory as an extra-ordinary personality. The role of the Russian sports culture representative, world-famous wrestler I. Poddubny as Suleiman’s teacher is highlighted.
