Abstract. The modern mass media are synthesis of verbal and non-verbal sign systems. Linguists call this synthesis "polycode" or "creolized text" and mention the tendency of the mass media to use iconic signs as frequently as possible, which is conditioned by the aspiration to attract attention, to simplify the information perception process and to form a certain emotional attitude among readers. The authors show how the print media journalists form readers’ evaluative attitude. The findings indicate that journalists use both verbal and non-verbal means (photos, caricatures, collages). A text and a picture supplement each other creating a powerful suggestive effect.
