Teaching Masters Degree Students to Decode Abbreviations in Technical Texts

Abstract. The process of information densification in technical texts manifests itself at the lexical level through increase in number and diversity of shortened lexical units, which hampers the information extraction process. It conditions the necessity to form Masters degree students competence in decoding abbreviations. Originality of the study lies in the fact that the authors for the first time identify difficulties in decoding abbreviations that are absent in dictionaries and suggest exercises aimed to overcome these difficulties. The conclusion is made about the necessity to include training on how to work with abbreviations in Masters degree programs.
