Abstract. A mouse is one of the most popular animals in the Eastern Asian countries where it symbolizes happiness and welfare. The paper shows how this image is interpreted in the Japanese folklore and identifies its role in the modern Japanese culture. Animal symbols in the Japanese national worldview have not been previously investigated, which determines scientific originality of the study, where a mouse image is analysed comprehensively by the example of fairy tales and folk rituals associated with a mouse as a symbol of luck. The research findings are as follows: the author shows how unambiguously the positive image of a mouse is represented in folklore, modern rituals and everyday practices, which indicates close interrelation of traditions and innovations in the modern Japanese folk culture.
