Translator’s Commentary on "San Zi Jing" as an Example of N. Ya. Bichurin’s Translation Tactics

Abstract. The article reveals the role of translator’s commentary by the example of N. Ya. Bichurin’s 1829 translation of Chinese classic text "San Zi Jing" ("Three Character Classic"). The book attracted Russian sinologist’s attention due to its rich culturological, religious, historical and literary content. The study focuses on analyzing N. Ya. Bichurin’s translation tactics. Scientific originality of the paper involves justifying the thesis that N. Ya. Bichurin for the first time in Russian sinology applied a detailed commentary, considering it an important and obligatory element of Chinese-Russian translation. As a result, the researcher reveals the key role of translator’s commentary when presenting Chinese realia to Russian readers.
