Abstract. The work examines peculiarities of the functional and semantic relations of the adjective "empty" in the modern English language using data from the British National Corpus. The paper aims to identify peculiarities of the semantics of this adjective, its collocability and lexico-semantic links. The work is novel in that it is the first to carry out a complete synchronic analysis of the derivational stem empt- using corpus data in English. The results show some difference in how the meanings of the adjective "empty" are recorded in the Corpus and in regular dictionaries, as well as a negative subjective assessment peculiar to this adjective.
