Androgyny as Cycle-Forming Motive of B. Akunin’s "Fandorin Series"

Abstract. The paper aims to prove that the semantic complex "androgyne" associated with Tiresias’s archetype is a cycle-forming motive of B. Akunin’s "Fandorin series". The ancient mythological figure Tiresias possessing androgynous features serves as an archetypical prototype of B. Akunin’s androgynous personages. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher identifies semiotic constants of the meta-cycle and traces their genesis - figurative, personage-related and thematic motives that dominate in Fandorin novels. The research findings are as follows: the author proves that androgyny, characteristic of the main and peripheral personages of the meta-cycle, is a repetitive cycle-forming motive which acquires consistent representation.
