Lermontov’s Quotations and Allusions in the Novel "Neglected People" by N. S. Leskov

Abstract. The research objective is to identify the artistic function of Lermontov’s quotations and allusions in the novel "Neglected People" by N. S. Leskov. The article reveals techniques of "Lermontov’s text" use, justifies their meaning-generating potential in overall context of the narration. Scientific originality of the paper lies in the fact that the researcher considers the little studied problem "Leskov and Lermontov". The conducted research allows drawing the following conclusions: the writer’s appeal to classical heritage is explained by the fact that Leskov, a witness of nihilistic trends of the 1860s, tried to stay in tune with the Russian literary tradition and portrayed tragic greatness of his personages.
