Abstract. The paper aims to reveal specificity of ethnic stereotypes representation by the material of A. P. Chekhov’s prose. The article analyses the linguistic means used to describe personages-foreigners in the stories "The Intruder", "The Lion and the Sun", "A Tripping Tongue", "Gusev", "A Daughter of Albion", "In a Strange Land". Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researchers for the first time identify specificity of the opposition NATIVE/OUTSIDER realization in the mentioned works, reveal peculiarities of the personages’ ethnic identity. The research findings are as follows: it is proved that the writer describes ethnic stereotypes with a view to compare different value systems, to emphasize cultural differences, to present examples of intercultural clashes.
