Thematic-Rhematic Progressions in Classical Chinese (W?ny?n) (by the Material of Stories from Liaozhai Zhiyi Collection)

Abstract. The paper aims to prove that actual division theory developed by Prague linguistic school representatives can be successfully applied to describe the structure of superphrasal unities in the late w?ny?n. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that actual division theory is applied to analyse new linguistic material, stories from Liaozhai Zhiyi collection. Moreover, the researcher for the first time proposes a classification of connecting means in classical Chinese. The findings are as follows: by the material of Liaozhai Zhiyi collection, the author identifies the basic thematic-rhematic progressions typical of superphrasal unities in the late w?ny?n, clarifies principles to differentiate a theme in sentences with the direct word order.
