Stylistic Colouring of Socio-Political Landscape of the 1860s in I. S. Turgenev’s Novel "Smoke"

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to identify three significant circles of characters in I. S. Turgenev’s novel "Smoke": ordinary people, revolutionary-minded public and socialites. They are depicted by the author in perception of the narrator and protagonist Litvinov in the modus spectrum of irony. Scientific novelty lies in analysing peripheral Turgenevian systematics, which has not been previously studied, i.e. principles of arranging secondary and incidental characters that are of little importance plot- and storyline-wise and stylistic features of their portrayal (on the basis of the epithet). As a result, it was found that Turgenev leaves the breakthrough solution of the "Russian issue" to Litvinov as a new hero in his artistic practice, trusting his assessment.
