Man at War in H. P. Lovecraft’s Short Stories: Insanity of Character, Suicide of Civilization

Abstract. The paper aims to study the image of man at war in H. P. Lovecraft’s works (by the material of the short story "The Temple", 1925). The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it expands the existing scientific ideas of H. P. Lovecraft’s citizenship, of how the main theme of world literature connected with understanding of the First World War topic was reflected in his works. As a result, the image of man at war in H. P. Lovecraft’s works has been studied. The historical background for the short story "The Temple" (1925) has been investigated. Its imagery, the main motives and key mythologemes have been analyzed. The social and literary context of the story, its importance to the creative evolution of the writer have been revealed.
