Main Trends in Changes to the General Word-Stock of the German Language

Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the main trends in changes to the lexical composition of the general word-stock of the German language. In order to do so, an attempt has been made to determine the role of the most productive ways of adding new lexical units to the word-stock, i.e. those units that emerged as a result of the new COVID-19 coronavirus infection, which struck humanity in early 2020, introducing changes to the normal life of the entire world community, as well as to identify the main sources of neologisms. As a result, it has been proved that new realities are reflected in the language through introduction of new words and phrases. Scientific novelty of the study lies in determining the ratio between the processes of borrowing, word formation and change in lexical meaning and how, in particular, the processes of compounding, derivation and clipping are correlated at the present stage of language development.
