Abstract. The purpose of the research is to study the leitmotif of water as one of the ways of lyrical cycle formation in Mikhail Kuzmin’s creative work. The paper traces the relationship between the leitmotif and the facts of the poet’s biography. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that the leitmotif of water in M. Kuzmin’s lyric poetry has not yet become a topic of independent research and also has not been considered as a special principle of cycle formation. As a result, it has been proved that the leitmotif of water in M. Kuzmin’s creative work contributed to the development of intertextual connections between parts of one work and between different works. The overlap between the leitmotif and the author’s biography helped M. Kuzmin to present his own biography of the soul in the form of an immense literary whole.
