Corpus-Based Analysis of Eurysemic Pairs of English Phrasal Verbs with Satellites ‘on/off’

Abstract. The paper aims to identify the role of phrasal verbs in the lexical-morphological structure of the modern English language. The scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that it uses the British National Corpus and EnTenTen15 based on the SketchEngine messenger to form the frequency representation of the highly frequent phrasal verbs with satellites ‘on/off’. The study demonstrates a range of relations between highly frequent phrasal verbs and their features in synchronic and diachronic aspects of the English language. As a result of the corpus-based analysis, it has been proved that satellite ‘on’ dominates in the opposition of satellites ‘on/off’. The frequency interpretation of eurysemic pairs of phrasal verbs with the studied satellites in different spheres of activity has been presented.
