Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the features of the artistic embodiment of P. Ya. Chaadaev’s image in the novel "Sergei Chalygin’s Confessions" by the Russian writer of the XIX century Ya. P. Polonsky. The scientific novelty lies in a comprehensive study of the novel "Sergei Chalygin’s Confessions" by Ya. P. Polonsky in the aspect of the artistic embodiment of P. Ya. Chaadaev’s image. As a result of the study, the key points and details are identified that indicate that in the novel under consideration, P. Ya. Chaadaev can be a prototype of insane Ilya Ilyin’s image. P. Ya. Chaadaev’s philosophical ideas were partly close to the author and they help to clarify his worldview, according to which the uprising on Senate Square slowed down the path of Russia development; and a hero like insane Ilyin was not ready to play the Messiah’s role although he was close to the truth.
