Specificity of Family Theme Refraction in Author-Narrator’s Creative Mind in N. V. Gogol’s "Dead Souls"

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the features of the family theme development in the creative mind of the author-narrator in the poem "Dead Souls". The scientific novelty lies in the fact that based on the consideration of the poem narrative structure, two forms of the author’s presence in the text are distinguished: the epic one, which is characterized by the position of being outside (M. M. Bakhtin), and the novel one associated with the entry of the author into the material world of the characters. Both the forms are combined in the image of the author-narrator synthesizing everyday and symbolic aspects of the family theme in his mind. As a result of the study, it is shown that through the depiction of the characters’ private home world, the author-narrator approaches the universal, philosophical understanding of the family theme.
