Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the functional potential of the multi-level lexical and grammatical means of reducing the intensity of speech impact used by participants in Russian- and English-language socio-political debates. The article presents a detailed analysis of the means that de-intensify (reduce) the speech impact of participants’ statements in socio-political debates. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of a functional approach to the analysis of the linguistic means of reducing the intensity of impact in the speech of politicians - participants in socio-political debates. As a result, it is proved that participants in socio-political debates, resorting to the linguistic means of reducing intensity, strive to create more favourable conditions for communication and increase the significance of their own image.
