Didactic Potential of Using Multimedia Visual Aids When Learning a Foreign Language in the Classroom and Independently (by the Material of the Multilevel Textbook "Cutting Edge")

Abstract. The paper discusses the use of multimedia visual aids as an effective way of foreign language teaching in present-day conditions. The purpose of the research is to identify the main didactic characteristics of educational videos in a foreign language for adult learners. Scientific originality of the work lies in the fact that the use of multimedia visual aids combining phonatory and kinetic features of paralinguistics as a didactic principle of visual aids usage is studied from the viewpoint of realisation of its internal didactic potential. The paper analyses the use of multimedia visual aids in the textbook "Cutting Edge" (3rd edition, published by Pearson), which is a multilevel English course for adults covering international training levels A1-C1. The research findings show that educational videos are underpinned by internal didactic principles (informativity and problematicity, accessibility and comprehensibility, continuity and orientation to practical activities, development of attention and logical thinking), which creates an authentic speech environment and supports students’ stable motivation for learning and communicative culture formation.
