Abstract. The paper aims to identify the phonetic characteristics of one of the three pronunciation varieties of Australian English (AusE) using a poem by Afferbeck Lauder as an example. The study is novel in that it is the first to present the analysis of the phonetic features of AusE involving the material of A. Lauder’s work, to describe the phonetic features of the so-called “Broad Australian” English on the basis of the poem “With Air Chew”. As a result of the study, it has been found that the main features of AusE phonetics are reflected in A. Lauder’s poem under consideration: different vowel realisations, consonant assimilation, elision, linking and intrusive /r/, consonant lenition and /l/-vocalisation.
