Abstract. The aim of the study is to identify the mechanisms of distancing “outgroup” members within the framework of the “ingroup - outgroup” binary opposition when modelling the image of the Russians. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that on the basis of a cognitive approach the parameters of distancing “outgroup” members within the “ingroup - outgroup” opposition have been identified in modern fiction in Spanish and French. The distancing of “outgroup” members happens due to attributing some negative characteristic to almost all the representatives of the Russian culture. Such features of the “outgroup” Rus-sians’ behaviour as tactlessness and rudeness are emphasized among the most frequent ones.
