Abstract. The purpose of the study is to provide a systematic description of a linguistic phenomenon called “Portuguese Aljamiado” or “Portuguese Aljamia”. The paper is novel in that it is the first to consider this phenomenon from the perspective of the historical phonetics of the Portuguese language, in particular, the features of using the Arabic letter Sīn <s> in Arabic-Portuguese documents. As a result, it has been shown that the letters Sīn <s> and Ṣād <ṣ> are not always used to stand for the sounds represented by the Latin ç and c(i/e), as pointed out by the researcher of Arabic-Portuguese texts D. Lopes. The letter Sīn <s> is also found to represent the sounds of the Portuguese language for which Latin s, as well as ss, x and ch stand. This leads to alternations with the letter Shīn <š>, which is commonly used in Portuguese documents to transliterate s, ss, x and ch.
