Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the specifics of the spy novel tradition formation in Russian literature of the ХХ century. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that for the first time a systematic idea of the spy novel genre and its varieties in Russian prose is given. The result of the study was that, firstly, based on the analysis of key Western and domestic studies on the spy novel, the most important trends in its study were identified; secondly, the genetic origins of the genre were determined and the stages of its formation and development in Russian literature were singled out. It has been established that the final formation of the spy novel, represented by several varieties (military, political, detective, parody, etc.), takes place in Russian prose in the second half of the ХХ century.
