Comparison of the Text “The Scythe” by R. Bradbury with Its Two Russian Versions

Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the most successful strategy of syntactic expressive means translation on the basis of comparison of the original text of the story “The Scythe” by Ray Brudbury and its two translations from English into Russian. The author considers the notions “idiostyle” and “idiolect”, defines their correlation. The article describes the characteristics of idiostyle, revealing in the analysis of literary works on different language levels: phonetic, lexical, syntactic, and on the whole text level. The author touches upon the question about the translator’s manner in the translation of the work from one language into another. Syntactic expressive means are analysed in English and Russian versions of the story. The scientific novelty of the study lies in a close connection of the story “The Scythe” by R. Bradbury with two translations into the Russian language in linguistic aspect, what has never been done before. Finally, it was proved that the translation strategy of N. Kunyaeva is more successful in comparison with the work of L. Brilova as it possesses the higher degree of equivalence when transferring into Russian such syntactic devices as polysyndeton with “and” and isolation of sentences into separate passages.
