Abstract. The aim of the study is to determine the degree of functional and pragmatic adequacy of the translation of children’s fiction texts by the modern American writer Kate DiCamillo from English into Russian, as well as to identify the most frequent pragmatically determined tactics that the translator used to convey culturally marked and expressive stylistic components of the analysed works. The article summarizes the experience of previous studies regarding the pragmatic aspect of translation, analyses the difficulties faced by the translator of children’s fiction, reveals the features of the implementation of the pragmatic adaptation strategy, the primary task of which is to have a pragmatic impact on the child reader planned by the author of the original text in accordance with his age and psychoemotional needs. The scientific novelty of the study lies in a new theoretical understanding of the pragmatic aspect of children’s literary texts translation, which have not yet become the object of linguistic research by Russian scientists. As a result of a comparative analysis, it was found that the tactics of informational modification of the text is the most frequent in the process of pragmatic adaptation of the text, and the success of the text-translation depends on the creative thinking and talent of the translator, and is not always associated with the equivalence of the original text and the text-translation.
