Degree of agnonymity of the word медиация ‘mediation’ in the linguistic consciousness of modern students

Abstract. The paper addresses the agnonymity of the word медиация ‘mediation’ in the Russian linguistic consciousness. The research aims to identify the levels of understanding of the word медиация by university students from non-humanities departments according to the levels of understanding proposed in the scheme of the agnonymity criteria by V. V. Morkovkin and A. V. Morkovkina. Attention is paid to the meaning of the word associated with the professional activity of a mediator in alternative dispute resolution: ‘mediation activities aimed at conflict/dispute resolution with the participation of a neutral third party’. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the empirical confirmation of the agnonymity of the word медиация in the given meaning based on a large sample of respondents and in the determination of the degree of comprehensibility/incomprehensibility of the word in the self-assessment of a contemporary student’s vocabulary. The research findings have shown that 59% of the respondents (n = 100) do not know the word at all, 27% falsely correlate the word медиация with the media sphere, music, meditation and a number of sciences not related to the practice of conflict resolution, in 7% of the cases there is a partial understanding of the word, and only 7% of the respondents are familiar with the word медиация in the meaning in question.
