Efficiency of Using Translation Memory Database while Teaching to Translate Technical Texts of the Subject Area "Metallurgy" (by the Example of SDL TradosStudio)

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the potential of using the SDL TradosStudio software when teaching translation to students of the "Translation and Translation Studies" speciality. The conducted research shows that introducing translation memory in educational process contributes to improving quality and speed of translation of texts of the subject area "Metallurgy". A proposed system of exercises on the basis of the SDL TradosStudio software aims to develop professional skills, such as translation, editing, adjusting quality control tools, creating and managing a translation memory database. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that relying on a linguistic analysis and their own translation experience, the authors introduce "learning-by-doing" methodology. The conclusion is made that competence in using a translation memory database optimizes translation process and raises graduates’ competitiveness in the modern labour market.
