On Potential of Using Self-Moderated Group Discussions When Teaching a Foreign Language

Abstract. The paper aims to reveal a didactic potential of self-moderated group discussions teaching communication skills in a foreign language. The article clarifies the notion "discussion moderation" taking into account foreign language education and describes practical experience of preparing students for moderation of a discussion on the chosen problem. Scientific originality of the study involves revealing the potential of self-moderated group discussions in forming critical thinking skills and oral communication skills taking into account three aspects: communication, interaction and social perception. The research findings are as follows: the author differentiates the notions "discussion moderation" and "discussion facilitation", presents taxonomy of the skills required to moderate discussion and ascertains criteria to evaluate the level of moderation skills.
