Training of Humanities Specialists with Oriental Language Skills at a Regional University: History and Modernity (by the Example of Nizhny Novgorod State University)

Abstract. The research aims to consider and analyse the history of training humanities specialists with Oriental language skills at Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod (LSUNN): from the first unauthorised attempts to learn Oriental languages in the 1950s to the creation of the Department of Oriental Languages and Linguoculturology and the introduction of Asian languages (Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, Korean) into the curricula of the "International Relations", "Foreign Regional Studies", "Tourism" training programmes at the present time. The authors identified and characterised stages of this process. Scientific novelty lies in the authors’ proposal to make a wider use of an integrated approach to the adjustment of educational programmes of higher professional education in the humanities, taking into account the globalisation process, regional peculiarities (in particular, the development of the Nizhny Novgorod region), the experience in graduates’ Orientalist training accumulated by universities, and students’ requests. As a result of the research, the authors have concluded that the current global situation, the orientation of historical cities towards tourism business development, values of the modern student generation, the accumulated experience of LSUNN make it possible to expand and improve the system of training specialists in Oriental Studies. The survey methodology contributes to the early identification of students’ interests in new elective courses (for example, in Oriental languages) and the use of the obtained data in the educational process.
