I. F. Timkovsky, a Prominent Russian Education Organiser (on the 250th Anniversary of His Birth)

Abstract. The paper aims to make the little-known facts related to the life and work of I. F. Timkovsky (1772-1853), a prominent Russian education organiser, available to historical-pedagogical science. The researcher describes in detail I. F. Timkovsky’s organisational and administrative activities when preparing to open Kharkiv University, as well as in the capacity of the headmaster of the Novhorod-Siverskyi Gymnasium in the years when the future great educator K. D. Ushinsky studied there. I. F. Timkovsky’s contribution to the development of the education system in XIX century Russia is also shown. The research sheds light on I. F. Timkovsky’s personality mainly by analysing reminiscences about him by his students K. D. Ushinsky and M. K. Chaly. The paper presents I. F. Timkovsky’s own memoirs, making it possible to provide a better picture of the historical events in which their author participated and which he witnessed. As a result, the researcher makes the conclusion about the significance of I. F. Timkovsky’s personality in the history of Russian education.
