Traditions of Orchestral Brass Performance of the XIX-XX Centuries

Abstract. The article describes the traditions of orchestral brass performance of the XIX-XX centuries. The peculiarities of serf and military brass bands functioning in the XIX century are identified and trends in their development are ascertained. The author highlights the main stages of brass bands formation and development in the XIX century, identifies the basic traditions of orchestral brass performance that predetermined popularity of military and civilian orchestras in the first half of the XX century. The paper justifies the thesis that the history of the Russian orchestral brass performance is closely associated with military orchestras. The researcher reveals the important traditions of brass performance, which influenced the activity of modern brass bands. The role of tradition in the revival of the Russian brass performance is emphasized.
