Abstract. The article is devoted to the stage production of "King Lear" (1987. Shota Rustaveli Theatre. Tbilisi) by the internationally acclaimed director Robert Sturua. The work aims to show that critics interpreted the content of the production basing mainly on what was happening to the characters, i.e. essentially, on the play’s chain of events, not taking into account the structure of the stage play; it aims also to submit the author’s own interpretation of the stage production. As a result of the study, the analysis of the stage production’s composition has been conducted and its artistic content has been identified. The research is novel in that it is the first to study analytically one of the most prominent stage productions of the XX century. The findings will be of use to theatre theoreticians and practitioners and drama school teachers in lecture courses and seminar classes on history and theory of the drama theatre.
