The English Phraseological Units as a Source of Information on Occupations and Professions

Abstract. The article examines the English phraseological units. The research objective includes analysing cognitive foundations of semantics of the phraseological units that contain information on occupations and professions. Scientific originality of the paper involves an analysis of linguistic material from the viewpoint of the cognitive approach, which allows identifying cognitive models of a phraseological unit formation. The findings lead to the conclusion that a phraseological unit semantics is formed according to metaphorical (ABSTRACT - PHYSICAL, ARTIFACT -ARTIFACT), metonymical (PART - WHOLE, PART - PART) and metaphtonymic cognitive models.
