Abstract. The article for the first time examines the olfactorium of A. P. Chekhov’s stories in the aspect of translatability. The study is conducted by the material of a text corpus, which includes 65 stories and their English translations. Using the comparative analysis method, the authors identify transformations of Chekhov’s olfactory images, consider specificity of translators’ interpretations of semantics and meaningful filling of olfactory lexemes in A. P. Chekhov’s stories. The conclusions are made that the most common translation mistakes include changing the connotative meaning of olfactory lexemes and neutralization of semantics of "stuffy" smells that represent specificity of Chekhov’s olfactorium.
