Abstract. The paper aims to develop principles of literary translation from Chinese into Russian, which requires transfer of cultural meanings. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that relying on S. Bassnett’s conception of culture-oriented translation, the researcher for the first time analyses V. S. Kolokolov’s techniques to translate the ancient Chinese book "Mencius". The conclusion is made that the translator uses the following strategies and techniques: foreignization (the basic strategy), domestication (the secondary strategy), explanatory translation, lexical transformations, etc.
