Abstract. The study aims to identify the characteristic features of diplomatic discourse and ways of indirect expression of disagreement within this discourse. The paper deals with the implicit ways of transmitting the addresser’s intention when performing a speech act of disagreement. A fragment of diplomatic discourse was analysed. The work is novel in that it represents the first attempt to analyse the syntagmatics of expression of an opinion, its argumentation and agreement and disagreement tactics in order to identify diplomats’ hidden intentions when expressing disagreement during negotiations. As a result, it has been determined that one of the features of diplomatic discourse is the delay in resolving an issue and it is achieved in various ways.
