System of Working on Professionally Oriented Vocabulary with Military School Cadets in Russian as Foreign Language Classes

Abstract. The study aims to develop a new system of exercises for introducing professionally oriented vocabulary, which would allow engaging students and increasing their motivation in learning Russian. The article examines peculiarities of working with professionally oriented vocabulary during a preparatory course basing on study guides developed by the Russian Language Department of the Military University. The advantage of these study guides lies in using various tasks including video clips, audio clips and texts, which increases objectivity of assessment and quality of the educational material acquisition. The study is novel in that it introduces an exercise system, whose employment has increased the number of good and excellent marks by 35%. As a result of the study, it is possible, due to the use of the competency-based approach and the practice-oriented principle in teaching Russian as a foreign language, to help students develop subject, language and communicative competences, which they will require while learning the language at the university, and to improve academic performance by 35%.
